The Redding area, where the Seven Hills Ranch is situated, was originally a trade and travel route from the California Central Valley to the Pacific Northwest and was occupied by the Native American Wintu Tribe. In the late 1800’s the Pacific Northwest Railroad built its rail through the Sacramento Valley and the California Gold Rush brought many settlers to the area. Among the influx of settlers were S.S. Langdon and family, who founded the ranch in 1853 on 4000 acres of rich, virgin land. In 1857 Sylvester Langdon was killed by grizzly bears on the property and his tombstone still remains in our vineyard today.
George Sheridan then purchased the ranch and hand dug the irrigation canal in the south fork of Bear Creek, which runs through the property. President William McKinley signed the original deed for the water rights and Sheridan Ranch was divided into parcels and sold, with Sheridan retaining 1700 acres.
Since Sheridan, there have been numerous owners, including Marilyn Goggin, who purchased the property in 1977 and renamed it the Inwood Ranch and Vineyard. Goggin was responsible for planting the original ten acres of merlot grapes. In October 2005, Reverge Anselmo purchased the 1580 acre ranch and has passionately brought the ranch back to life. Anselmo planted over 200 acres of hay and oats, added acreage to the red-soiled vineyard, brought in cattle and lamb to graze overgrown pastures, cleaned up hundreds of acres of brush and weeds, added a wine tasting room, winery, and much more.
The original barn, oak tree, pump house and ranch equipment such as trucks and tractors still lay on the land and add rustic beauty to the historical plot.

Anselmo also purchased the 670-acre Bear Creek Ranch down the road to save it from a development project that had threatened this peaceful community for many years. Anselmo has since bestowed great care upon the Bear Creek Ranch by irrigating pastures and beautifying Bear Creek, which elegantly winds through the picturesque Inwood Valley property.
In the coming year he plans to offer camping, fishing and picnicking along the creek and waterfall.
Adding to the land’s unrivaled splendor, Mt. Lassen, Mt. Shasta, and the Trinity Mountains all encircle Seven Hills Ranch. Mount Lassen is one of the only active volcanoes in the US. After erupting in the early 1900’s, it was the last to erupt in the continental US until the 1980’s eruption of Mt. St. Helens in Washington State.
The fifth highest peak in California, Mount Shasta stands some 14,179 feet (4,322 m) above the surrounding area. Theodore Roosevelt said "I consider the evening twilight on Mt. Shasta one of the grandest sights I have ever witnessed."
Northwest of Redding, the Trinity Alps stretch majestically over an area of more than 800 square miles, with peaks ranging from 1,350 feet to over 8,900 feet.
The history and beauty of the Seven Hills Ranch and Anselmo Vineyards is an unforgettable experience we are honored to share.
